When Should Parents Seek a Professional Evaluation?

Persistent feeding or oral-function concerns deserve timely, individualized advice.

Ask for help with persistent concerns

Contact your child's pediatric clinician or an appropriate feeding professional for ongoing latch difficulties, pain, concerns about milk intake or growth, or restricted movement that affects daily tasks. For older children, specific eating or speech concerns can guide referral.

You do not need to diagnose tongue-tie before asking for support. Explain what is difficult, how long it has been happening and what you have already tried.

Do not delay urgent feeding advice

Poor feeding, fewer wet diapers or concerns about infant weight gain warrant prompt pediatric advice. If your child seems seriously unwell, has trouble breathing or is difficult to wake, seek urgent medical care rather than waiting for a dental consultation.

An evaluation is a chance to understand the concern, not a commitment to treatment. Ask about other possible causes and a plan for support and reassessment.
