Movement with a purpose
A clinician may observe how the tongue lifts, extends or moves from side to side. These movements are considered in relation to the person's concerns, not as a home test with a pass or fail result.
Oral tasks involve coordination, sensation and learned skills as well as range of motion. Restricted movement is one possible consideration, not an explanation for every feeding or speech difficulty.
Avoid self-grading
Online checklists, tongue-tip shapes and photographs cannot establish the cause of a problem. Share concrete observations about a task that is difficult instead of trying to assign a severity grade.
Depending on the concern, dental, pediatric, feeding or speech-language professionals may help. The goal is understanding what affects function and which support is appropriate, whether or not a procedure is considered.
